MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Donna L. Cardiello

High Mountain Middle School is home to 286 students in grades five through eight with 38 full and part-time teaching and service staff members.  We strive to provide a learning environment that enables each adolescent to learn and grow personally, socially, and academically.  Our goal is to nurture, in each child, a love and respect for learning that will continue into adult years

We believe that a successful school is one in which parents, teachers, and students work together.  Parent involvement enriches the quality of education that the children receive.  The continuing tireless efforts of the North Haledon Parent Teacher Organization and the North Haledon Education Foundation illustrate parent commitment to a rewarding school program.

The academic program in the middle school is organized in interdisciplinary teams.  This “teaming” pattern of instruction divides the each grade into groups where the child may receive instruction in one or more subject from the same teacher.  This promotes stronger relationships among students and faculty and provides teachers with a more suitable environment to recognize and accommodate the needs and learning styles of their students.

Special subjects or programs that are offered to our students at HMS include art, health, physical education, instrumental/general music, home economics, industrial arts, computers and Spanish.  In addition, the students receive drug awareness education D.A.R.E. in health classes in collaboration with the North Haledon Police Department.

We realize the importance of values education and continue to utilize “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” which provides our students with the right tools to make better decisions.  This program has touched our students in a variety of ways.  The habits build upon one another to help improve relationships, increase self confidence, and make informed decisions.

The focus of our instructional program is to prepare our students to assume greater responsibility for their own learning in terms of study and organizational skills.  The acquisition of these skills is most important as our students progress through our educational system and will help them become independent learners in high school and beyond.

High Mountain Middle School recognizes its role in supporting the many changes that occur in the middle years of child development.  We recognize the importance of providing support for the whole child to foster academic, personal, physical, emotional, and social growth.  We welcome your feedback and your participation in our program.  By working together, we can help each child strive to reach his or her highest educational potential and make HMS a great place to learn and grow.
